Ok, so got the motor mounted and did carb jobs and everything is back together. Going to check timing using the Joe Reeves method, question 1: What should WOT timing be? On the 1996 88 Special I had it was 24 degrees using the Reeves method, same for the '85 115?

Question two, doing the link and syc, When I advance the throttle to WOT the throttle plates dont open very much. The cam roller is there but the plates only open a little. Aren't they supposed to be almost 90 degrees to the closed idle position?

Something is way off, I dont have any history, only know I got it cheap because the guy who had it couldn't figure out how to put it back together after he started to tinker with it. Compression is good

Usually the factory puts a timing label on the front of the airbox cover. The factory timing on that engine should be 28 degrees, set according to the factory service manual. Keep in mind the factory method of setting WOT timing is different than the Joe Reeves method. (both are valid, but are not set the same way.) The throttle plates should open to the point that they are level (flat-parallel to the water) when opened to WOT. If they don't open fully, you should double check your sync and link procedure.

Thanks for that emdsapmgr

Have done the Timing on my other motor with the Reeves method will do the same with this. Something is up though as far as the throttle plates and I need to look in to that first.

The carb roller normally has a thin, cylindrical coating of plastic around the roller hub. When these get old, that outer coating can deteriorate with age and can actually come off. When this coating is missing, the diameter of that roller changes and the sync and link gets out of whack- and the engine won't run right. Double check the roller to make sure it is still in one pc.
