Hello,
I am new to the forum, and just bought my first boat. I bought and installed a new tilt motor because the old one had broken the shaft that connects the motor to the hammer coupler. I had it out for about 2hrs and i think the new motor shaft broke, does anyone know what is causing this? Does it have to do with the clutch pack? The new motor is going to cost another $200 so I have to find out what is causing the damage.
Any help would be great.

Re: 84 stringer tilt motor problems

I'd take the whole tilt mechanism apart & inspect for bound up or corroded parts. Remove the clutch pack & clean/repack it. Remove the brass ring gear, worm gear, shaft & hammer blow. Clean & inspect it all. Make sure the pivots are well greased & you can move the drive up & down easily by hand when you have the clutch out. Check for play in the clutch shaft bushings - excess play could cause it to bind up and/or allow water to get into the clutch housing. When you put it back together, make sure the clutch housing cover isn't clamping down on the end of the clutch shaft and causing it to bind. I've doubled up the gasket on the clutch cove to give the shaft a bit more length so it moves freely.

Have someone look at rebuilding your tilt motor before you buy a replacement. If they can it's a bunch cheaper than buying a new one. Broken shaft may make it a goner, but it's worth a look.

Thanks for the replies.
I have talked to a couple of shops in my area and they either said it could not be rebuilt or it would cost more money than a new one. I still don't understand why the outdive drops like brick a when the motor was working, would only tap the switch down once and the drive would be all the way down in a fraction of a second.

Re: 84 stringer tilt motor problems

Mine was rebuilt for about $45 last year. No new parts that I know of though, so that broken shaft may be the hangup. Do some looking on ebay though - it's not crazy to find a couple in decent shape on there. Even if you buy one for $60 and then have to pay $60 to rebuild it - it cost you time, but you're $60 to $80 ahead. If you can swing for the new one, might give you a little peace of mind for a while.

When I tap my switch the drive doesn't fall quite as fast as you make it sound (like a brick). But there is some "run on" in the process - hit the button, motor goes off, drive starts to fall, release the button, and the motor kinda' winds down and the drive is still fallin'! It'll get all the way down pretty quickly - and that's normal. It's not a trim system, and it's really designed to be UP or DOWN. If it'll raise the drive, and you can go back and push or pull on the drive and it doesn't move - it's probably working pretty normally (obviously, I mean after you get the motor deal worked out).

Hope you get it solved soon - it is a pain.

A lot of good advice here for making sure everything is freed up, BUT Never, Never hit the down toggle and hold it till the outdrive slams down. You will end up spitting the worm gear right out of the outdrive, into the drink. And if not that, something else will break.

It is normal for the drive to drop, probably 3 times faster than it lifts.
