I have a 1984 90hp Johnston vor.(Australian) The motor goes really well however the only maintenance that I am aware of that has been done is the water pump impeller and housing has been replaced. I know there is heaps that could be done but what would be the most important on the list. I was told to have the gaskets replaced as a top priority, would this be correct.?

Hi jarob....

If unsure as to the condition of the engine, I'm assuming from your post that it is new to you, take it to a dealership for a through check up.

If you want to do it yourself, a service manual for that engine is the only way to go.

Tune up would include:
Compression test.
Ignition test with new spark plugs.
Fuel system which could include a carb rebuild if needed...depends on how the motor is running, checking fuel lines are tight and replacing filters.
Lower Unit test for leaky seals and replacement of gear lube with new drain and vent plug gaskets.
Alarm tests of the VOR alarm system.
Engine lube.
Run up test for idle/WOT timing and to check engine temp. Decarb is always a good idea also.
A lot of folks also have their water pump impeller changed out every other year or so also.

This may seem a lot but once done a few times, and with a OEM service manual to guide you, it could be done in a couple hours at the beginning of the season. Not sure though which gaskets you are talking about. And again, It can't be stressed enough how valuable a service manual would be. Hoped we have helped some. Thanks!!

Thanks OUTBOARDJIM, yes the motor is new to me. As I said it is really going well so should I leave well enough alone and just change the lower end oil each season. I read in an archived posting that this motor is prone to blowing head gaskets with dyre consequences and should have them replaced periodically.

Am still not sure which way to go. My outboard mechanic says to replace the head gaskets (as a preventitive measure)so should I go with, " If it ain't broke, don't fix it", or should I have this regular mantenance ( and possibly broken head studs)done. The motor is going well with no problems.

^

I too am curious about being "proactive" on the head gaskets, if all is well leave 'em alone?

I have an 84 V4, so far so good, debating putting on new head gaskets, or at least re-torque?

RKwood
