84 Johnson 50hp Grinding Going Into Rev

I Have An 84 Johnson 50 , It Slightly Grinds Going Into Rev . I Have Checked To See If It Goes In Freely (manualy) And It Does . On The Cable Adjustment If I Go Anymore Towards Rev It Grinds In Forward . Anyone Have A Remedy???? Thanks For The Help...................dave

Good chance that you are engaging the gears too slowly, they will all grind if done too slow. Just pop it into gearquickly, both forward and reverse, I know that this sounds harsh, but that is the way they are intended to be shifted!

has the lower unit been of just prior to this starting. if not, is cable original, it could be starting to fail. the will deteriorate inside. the shifting to forward is a pulling action, going to reverse is a pushing action, if the cable is failing it will not push as far as it use to. in other word it is loosing the distance it use to move the shifter on the motor. thus the lower is not going into gear. has the lower unit been of just prior to this starting.
