84 johnson 15hp will not fire!

Help! I just picked up a 15hp johnson.It has good spark,fuel going to the carb.I have not check compresson yet,but when pulling to start it feels normal(doesn't pull to easy).I also checked to see if the key was sheered on the flyweel.It was fine. any ideas as what to check next?

Hey Supersquirrel,<br />Try squirting some fuel mix right into the throat of the carb. If it fires then you might think about tearing the carb. down and giving it a good cleaning.

Thanks Almost retired, but that didn't do it.I poured fuel down the throat pulled and pulled,nothing. however i sprayed some quick start in and got a little bit of fire. Once! tryed it several more times,Nothing!

Hi Supersquirrel,<br />Try to stay away from those quick start products, they tend to wash away the lubrication that your engine needs. Pull the plugs, check them as you pull them; are they wet, fouled, or look normal? Next do a compression check on both cyls. they shouldn't vary more than 15# between cyls. Just keep in mind that it requires these things to make an engine run.<br />1. compression<br />2. fuel in the proper ratio<br />3. spark delivered at the right time<br />If the above conditions are met the engine should run.<br />Good Luck

Once again thank you almost retired,I pulled the plugs they look good! did a compression test,40lbs.on both cylinders after 10 pulls,22lbs.on first pull on upper 24lbs on first pull on lower. I dont know what the rate should be, but that seems low.<br />I started this reserch because my one and only boat machanic in the area says two months before he can get to it!<br />If(and i think it does) need to be rebuilt.Where do i find the parts? I checked here at iboats and they do not have.

Hello again Supersquirrel,<br />You should have at least 5 quick pulls on the rope when doing a compression test, and that's on each cyl. If you truly have that low compression, you probly will have to do an overhaul, or a de-carboniziation.<br />Good Luck
