84 evinrude 9.9 won't start?

I recently purchased a 1984 9.9 that had been sitting for awhile. Went through it and did all the basics, carb,impeller, thermostat, etc,,,,, got it to start twice today,but wouldn't stay running. Tried to restart with starting fluid. no luck. gas is getting to carb, plugs are wet, plugs have spark. checked spark with a gap tester. spark is more on the orange side? is that good or bad? If bad, where to go from here? coils? thanks

What size open air gap will the spark jump ??

i believe it was about an 1/8 to 3/16? what should it be? I've saw it before, but can't find it now....

On a good magneto the spark will jump a gap of 7/16" or more.----Time to trouble shoot the system.

ok thx. gotta order a rewind spring now, pulled so much the old one broke.. Not really it was old. I found a part number for the rewind spring. does anyone have a part number for the rope? or what size and lenght?
