83 merc 470 won't start when hot ?

Hello all, my fishing buddy has a 20ft wellcraft, with a 1983 mercruser 470, 170hp i/o. problem is it won't start after it has run a while (heatsoaked). she,ll start fine when cold and after it has cooled. when it's failed the battery voltage drops to about 6.5 vdc. the igntion switch reads good with an ohm meter. is there something else we could check. also the battery voltages are normal and has a cca rating of 500. Thanks for any thoughts or ideas. T

thanks rex, hadn't thought of that. will check the timing. The motor seems to be real tight and very hard to crank as if it were binding. Thanks for your input. T
