I have a 1983 johnson 115 hp outboard.

I ran it all last summer, at the end of the summer when i winterized it, the mechanic told me i had a bit of water in the lower unit an that i needed a seal replaced. he didnt tell me which seal, and he did tell me that he cannot replace it (he doesnt do that i guess).

can anyone tell me, is there a seal that generally goes out? or could it be multiple different possible seals? i DO have a manual...

any information helps. reply here, or at ortizcarpetcare@yahoo.com

thanks,

Marcos

could be one of severeal seals, either the input shaft seal under the water pump, the prop shaft out of the gearcase, the shift shaft seal or even one of the screws for drain and fill. best option is to either replace all of them, or have the case pressure tested to see which one is bad

You more than likely have to tear down the lower unit to fix any seal any way, So my advice is to reseal the gearcase and replace the water pump at the same time. Just makes sense.
