83-evenrude won't go fast-9.9

I have an old 83 evenrude 9.9. Starts first pull.<br />Idles like a champ. will not run at high speed unless the choke is out and then it only goes at 25 % power. It occassionly runs perfect. What the heck is wrong? I have replaced the fuel pump and rebuilt the carb. Whats left?

Yes I have a manuel. I will rebuild the carb again. I will definitly replace the high speed jet. I can't come up with anything else.

redboat,<br /><br />Are you dropping a cylinder? Pulling one plug wire, then the other, may tell you something.

hi speed jet clogged ,,or you are sucking air in fuel line connection and not letting fuel get to engine,,

Replaced fuel line.<br />All I think it is now is high speed jet. It appears fine when I got into the carb. I thank you for your replies.

Did you check the carb to manifold bolts are tight? I once didn't tighten them enough and the extra air getting in to the combustion chamber resulted in similar simptoms to what you are describing. <br />I'm no expert, but just a thought.....

CHECK YOUR EXHAUST on outboard motors the exhaust control is just as important as fuel compression adn spark. if the exhaust is clogged, restricted, or too open the motor wil do all sorts of ****. you may have to pull the power head to do this. make sure to replace the gasket.

redboat...Not much can go wrong with a high speed jet unless someone smacks it with a hammer. Make sure it ain't clogged up. Take a piece of denim, like from your blue jeans, and take a thin strip and clean the jet hole. Make sure there ain't nothing in the bowl that can get up against the jet hole. Double check float setting. Just a question....has the old 9.9 been beefed up to a 15hp?<br /><br />OBJim

Don't know if they are the same but my 99 15 hp evinrude did the same and after rebuilding the carb didn't work, they finally found that the elect. advance mech. was bad. works good now!

Hi Red, Before you do anything try going fast without the cover on the engine. Be careful Let me know if there is difference.
