I'm having an ignition (or lack off) issue with my '83 50 hp Merc. Spark then no spark. It would start, sometimes, and keep running and then restart OK randomly. Now it will not start at all. I've cleaned all the connections and checked for broken wires. Someone has been into this motor previously. I have a gut feeling it may be a switch box issue. While tracing out wires I found this module that was added that doesn't appear on my schematic. Can someone help me out with what it's function is. It was added into the wires from the stator going to the switch box. I eliminated the kill wire to the switch box and the 2 yellow stator wires to the rectifier and still no spark. Thanks in advance for any help!!! I hope the photos go thru!!!!! This is a 4 cylinder cd ignition motor.....

Re: '83 50hp Merc ignition issue & ID

Did more research and found out that the unknown module I sent the photos of is part of the replacement stator kit package and doesn't show on schematics but is necessary with the new replacement stator. Using the CDI trouble shooting web link I went thru the preliminary stuff, still no spark, I'm at the stator testing point and a little lost with the terminology. What exactly is the DVA?? How is this used with a non running motor?? Also they refer to problems with the stator or the 'pack'. What is the pack?? They refer to the switch box as the switch box, so what is the pack?? Bottom of Page 81 of the CDI link. What is the best, or easiest way to check the switch box??? Thanks again............

Usually by testing every component in the electrical system except the switch box you can find out by default that the problem is in the switch box. You need voltage being generated to test for DVA. I've checked with a VOM to get resistances and done it that way. When you operate your ignition switch, is the circuit making each time? Checked for any blown fuses ?
