I am trying to get a friend's boat going. It runs fine on earmuffs in neutral and in gear. When he puts it into the water, it runs fine in neutral, but when he puts it in gear the engine dies. This boat was running fine one weekend then the next this was happening.I have pulled the carbs and cleaned them, but this hasn't fixed the problem. Anyone have any ideas? I am a former motorcycle and snowmobile mechanic, I have limited knowledge of outboards other than basics. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

check your fuel mixture as well as your fuel pump and your shifter linage and your lower end something might be binding or its not getting enough gas for the torque it needs

whats it ilding at?
should be close to 600ish. 500, 550ish in gear in water i belive. may be just bump up the idle a bit. A little faster wont hurt. I have to fuss with mine from time to time as its getting old (like the owner) and needs a little tinkering.
