Have trunion nut adjusted almost to full travel and in reverse if I go slightly above Idle it clunks, as-in coming out of gear intermitantly.
I have adjusted cable to the point I'm getting a slight click when going into fwd now.
I also noticed on the block, the shift lever is hiting the block and has removed some paint there.
If the pin is removed, It shifts by hand perfectly, but the pin allows about 1/8" more travel to the rear, being removed.
Is this an indication of gear or shift fork wear????
No slop in the box.....it was new as I let the other control box go with my 115. This is OMC box with a 1997 manufacture date, never used before I installed it with the 200.
I have about a turn and a half left at nut, but I know it will not engage properly in fwd if I move it anymore....
Lower unit job in my future?????
BTW, L.U. is off of an '84 model...

I don't know what the LUs are like on new motors (I have a '72 hydroelectric shift), but maybe the clutch dog or reverse gear lobes are starting to wear? If it's not a continuous grinding they may be just starting to round off and not mating together correctly. I don't know for sure, you'd have to take it apart to know for sure, just a suggestion. I do know however if it is that, there's a decent selection of reverse gears and clutch dogs on ebay for around $24.99 each :)

If anyone else happens to look into this, the gear skip is not at Idle but after adding some power in reverse such as pulling off the trailer, beach, etc...

There is no spring.....it's a solid shift held in place by the cable, which is new. The shift clevis is hitting the block and not fully engaging in the lower end.

But how's forward? Does it go to the normal postition? I mean, what if someone forced it in reverse when the engine was stopped, and bent the shift linkage inside the engine?

I can't belive I'm trying to help you with an '80 200hp V6. Talk about being out of one's league! Take all I say with a pound of salt! :D

Kenny...what engine in the 84 year, is it off of? May be a difference in the shift linkage on the engine. Let me know and I'll see what I can find out.

Supposedly a 150hp....From what I can find in the fich, the shift-shaft is the same unless I'm reading it wrong...and, 1 thing I thought of tonight was that possibly I have the shift shaft screwed too far out??? If it's hitting the block before locking in, to me it would indicate deminsion issues, as in too long.
Paul, hey, you got some great knowledge, don't ever be afraid to offer your advice to me, I highly respect your opinion.
I'm going to drop the lower and remeasure shift shaft. I've got 2 shift linkage arms, so I will check one against the other and see if they have the same angle....good thinking Paul!

Kenny: If you have'nt already, you might want to take a look at the shift cradle. That part is a stamping! See if the lever's are bent, and take a look at where they seat into the shifter which is an aluminum part. The shift rod height is 22 1/16". Even though the control box is new, and should'nt be a problem, with the shift cable disconnected, push, and pull on the connector end, and see if there is any lost motion, or play. Is the screw that hold's the shift link where the shift rod at the top hook's into, tight, and in place. My guess is that something is loose, or bent at the engine end, if you can rule out the control box, or cable. That shift link bottoming out has to be telling us something.

Re: '82 Rude 200, reverse gear clunking...

R.Johnson, I just finished this powerhead about 6 months ago, and during reassembly, I had 4 intake manifolds to choose from....the one with the best mounting surface and tightest linkage boss was the one I chose.
The bolt going thru the shift shaft is tight and has a minumum amount of play, maybe .020 at most.
I think I have simply missed the correct shaft length adjustment, as the shift rod linkage is not centered...is has too much differential, that's why I think I've adjusted out of the fwd position, but still don't have a solid reverse, but then it's hitting the block so it can't go any farther anyway. I may be able to remove the bolt and push it into fwd and screw the shift shaft in a couple of turns and try it....that "should" let it go into reverse without hitting the block, I just don't know what it will do to fwd ......
