I purchased my first boat, a 1982 MasterCraft Stars & Stripes. I have used it about 10 times this summer already and on the last trip to the lake ran into a problem while attempting to pull a rider out of the water.
I am having an issue where I accelerate and it seems that the transmission is slipping periodically.
also when the boat is in Neutral it continues to slowly accelerate forward.
as this is my first boat I am unsure how the velvet drive transmission works and I can not figure out how to repair it, although I am decently mechanically savy. I am wondering if a rebuild kit is necessary.

any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

i had the same problem running mine i was told wrongly that it was a safety mechanisim to prevent damage to the velvet drive because i was pushing the boat too hard (i wasn't i was only pulling a ringo with my nine year old in it ) so i carried on using it untill i lost all drive one day and had to paddle it to shore (very imbarssing) when i lifted the engine cover i found that the velvet drive had lost all its fluid into hull!!! so after getting a local mastercraft guru to have a look he diagnosed that it was eather a pipe or a seal had gone.it turned out to be the seal so i had that replaced and also for good measure replaced the pump as i had been running it dry whilst trying to get it ashore all this for ?400 so i would definatly recommned having it looked at by some one who knows about velvet drives before you have to do the paddle of shame
hope this helps
