Within 1 minute of startup the flywheel key breaks. Too soft of key or what? Can anybody help me with this?

Re: '82 Johnson 50hp flywheel key problems???

The flywheel key MUST be part number 307480, not some makeshift key from a hardware store. It must be aligned so the the flat outer surface is aligned straight up and down, NOT aligned with the crankshaft taper.

The flywheel nut MUST be torqued to exactly 105 foot pounds. Anything less results in a sheared key.

Since you've already sheared a few keys, the taper of the crankshaft and flywheel must be cleaned and restored (as close as possible) to normal, otherwise the result is a poor fit which will also shear a key..
