What should I use for oil
and can I refill it from the top
and how do I know how much oil to add or know when it' full?

NO------You fill gear oil from the bottom till it runs out the top vent hole.---Only way to be 100% sure air is out.------Motor in normal running position.-----Simple job and a mistake here could be expensive.
