The model number tells me it is an 81 90hp V4 but the motor is set VRO which I thought did not start until 83. Is there any other numbers on the motor its self that will help identify it.
Well, it's true that the VRO did not come into play until 1984, so I don't know how your 81' model is equipped with it. May be a upgrade that was done before you got it or your motor may be newer.
The welch plug is a round aluminum plug that sits on top of one of the clyinder banks. It will have the serial/model number stamped in it. It's stamped information is supposed to match the transom bracket label. Possible that you have a later model engine on your older midsection.
