Howdy all, been a while since i posted - recently my father and i bought a 2nd hand 60hp Johnson 2stroke - 1981
motor we have heard running, if i jump the pins on the starter solenoid will kick over without any issues and if fuel is added it will start. the fellow we bought it from had been using it for ages until one day he turned the key and it wouldn't start. but if he turns the key to ON and then jumps the solenoid it will start and run all day long. now.. i have attached two photo's that are of 1. a brown wire coming from the harness that connects the solenoid to the distribution block but was never attached.. to said bar. i cant find any visual aids to tell me where it was to be connected etc, another issue i have is it appears someone has taken a spring and stretched it from what looks to be a little solenoid that would pull the string and pull open the choke.. if someone happens to have a 1981 Johnson 60 that they would be able to take a photo for me that would be amazing.

Bump, Really need some help. If i turn the key it still acts as a kill switch.. if someone could post a check list or ways to narrow it down as to why it wont start with the key that would be awesome.

the brown wire has got nothing to do with the starter solenoid it is suposed to be connected to the heat sensor its the + for the sensor the solenoid wires are black for earth & red & yellow for +

If you do understand electrical wiring or simple wiring schematics then you absolutely need to buy the original factory shop manual for your OB. It has everything you could possible want to know about your engine in that manual. It will have the wiring schematic as well as how to disassembly and reassembly every part on that engine... That will be you surest bet for any problem now or in the future...and I highly suggest it too...

you fix electrical problems with a diagram and a voltmeter. The basic starter set up on your motor is the red with violet strip starts at the battery side of the solinoid then goes to the inline fuse (check fuse) this then goes to the red plug then connects to the boat. the boat harness goes to the back of the key terminal B. when you turn the key to start then red with violet strip is connected to terminal S which is yellow with red strip. this now runs back to the start solinoid via the red plug. The starter solinod uses power from the yellow with red strip and a black to ground to energize and close the solinoid that supplys main power to the starter.

The motor does not require power from the key to run and it will run until the key shorts the magneto to ground

the boat electrical items do not run off the key

get a meter and check all the points or at least check the inline fuse.

Edit: i forgot theres a safety switch in the controller/side of motor after the wire leaves the S terminal it goes to the switch to check that you are in neutral. Boat will only start in neutral

Glenn could you explain where the 20amp fuse should be? via my diagram it should be contained inside of the red harness plug.. which doesn't seem right as i've had that open and there didn't seem to be a fuse..

i can see one off the fuse holders in pic 2 of your original post its the black rubber inline fuse on the left side of picture. you pull that apart and the fuse is inside. ( it says twist on the side of it so twist and pull)

Re: 81' Johnson key issues

thank you very much, i was unsure of what that was till i decided to just pull it apart. opened er up and found a blown 20amp 1/2 inch fuse.. went on a mission and a half visiting all my local stores trying to find a replacment.. no one stocks 20 amp that small ( 15 amp was closest. went to the local boat store.. paid $4.95.. felt so ripped off for what i got but in the end she now starts on key! thank you very much to all who commented on this post.

Your public library should have a manual for that engine whereas you can observe the electrical diagram. If not, purchase a manual that contains the diagram. You can always recoup the purchase price by selling it with the engine whenever that time comes about.
