I have not picked up a service manual yet but hopefully will soon. Anyway, wanted to pull the oil strainer/filter this weekend and it appears that this part is not easily reached. Am I correct in assuming that I have to pull the whole head just to get to this part? Or, is it more of a job than that? Thanks in advance!

Stating the obvious here I'm sure to some of you but answered my own question.

Pull the head to access the oil pump

Pull the whole power head to access the strainer......not looking forward to this.

I think the oil strainer is under the entire powerhead I can get you a pic of the oil "pan" if you need one I have a 7.5 horse parts motor that is apart right now. How come you want to get to it?

Running out of options as to what's happening. Have a few things to check first before going through all of that though. Need to check the oil pressure and if non-existent or very low will check the pump first. If not that, then the strainer. This engine set up for 6+ years (maybe 10). I can get it started easily but after about a minute it starts lose RPMs then eventually stalls. Will typically not start until it cools back down. Water flow is fine. When I removed the valve cover it appears "dryer" than what should be normal in my opinion. Fearing a soft seize.

Did you clean the carb? If so make sure that the float was set to the proper position, when I had mine setup incorrectly it did this.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did not set the float position as I was not even aware that I could adjust that. I'll take a peak at this as well. Thanks!
