80's Mercury 9.8 Racing motor water pump issue

The impeller was bad so I replaced it. Water will now only come out the exit hole when going slow, when I try to go faster exhaust smoke comes out of the exit hole. Does anyone know what the issue could be?

you have got to be kidding?

pull the pee pipe off and make sure nothing it plugged.

There is nothing about any of the 9.8's that could be considered a RACING motor!
