Anyone have a good recommendation for one? I just need a single sheet unit, not expensive sheet feeder type. The articulated lid lets you copy book pages easily.

This electronic obsolescence stuff is really galling. I have finally just detached an HP 5p scanner and have marshaled to to go to the recycler along with some old 14" crt monitors. A number of years ago, I bought a couple of different flatbed scanners that used the ??card to operate them. They were nothing but frustration so I stepped up to the more expensive HP 5p scanner. It worked well (plug and play, for sure) but then came Windows XP. No one ever wrote and drivers for that scanner to operate on HP. I bet I did not have that scanner for more than a year before it became worthless. I had been using it with Windows 2000.

Currently I have been getting by using the scanner on my Officejet 6210 printer. The problem is that it does not have an articulated lid so book pages are very hard to do. In addition it is only a 8.5 x 11".

I've actually been using my digital camera for odd size scans. Lay the book/painting/document flat on a table near a window and try to square up the shot.

I've got a pretty good digital camera, but not a DSLR. I could probably make OCR work from the images I get.

have a CanonScan 8800F at my office. no document feeder but the flatbed part works good enough. it's several years old and running strong. i'm pretty sure it handles up to 14".

My HP Photosmart Plus (all in one printer scanner) has a removable lid and so does my Epson (scanner only).

If you check many of the scanners have easy to remove lids.

I have an (now older) HP all-in-one scanner/copier/photo printer. (model c4480 photosmart)

It does better than average scanning. Photo printing was all right and the copy function worked just like a copier.

The twain scanning driver interface, was a little clunky, but maybe new ones are better.

Well worth the $100 I paid for it

As I mentioned, I currently have an HP all in one Officejet USB printer/scanner/copier. It does a respectable job at scanning. It's limitations are: no articulated cover and only 8.5 x 11 capabilty. The software is easy to use.

I still use my HP Scanjet 6200C , it's about 12 y.o. and twain compliant.

Originally was used with my Win98, then switched to this XP unit a couple years ago, no issues.

USB connected.

Do you actually need to close the cover to use it? The HP all in one I use at work will scan just fine with the lid open.
Works great when you want to send a fellow co-worker a disturbing picture of your face pressed up against the glass.... :D ;)

The 5P scanner is supported under XP using the HP DeskScan 2.9 and Copy driver. It can be downloaded from a variety of sites

Well dingbat, it's too late now. I just took the scanner along with a couple of old 14" crt monitors and dropped them off at the local electronics recycler. I do not know if I ever tried your suggestion but I did try a couple of others but none of them worked. I do know that HP never wrote any specific upgrade drivers for Windows XP.

It's really a shame as I don't think I had a year of light use on that scanner before I had to go from Win2000 to XP.

I have a Brother all in one printer/scanner/copier/fax. MFC-J6510DW. Not articu..thingy lid, but it is A3, so copying book pages is easy. And I'm running it on Windows XP... and it was cheap... :D :D ;)
