Picked up an old outboard on the weekend @ yard sale. Have a freind looking for cheap motor to put on small aluminum. Sears 7 hp ted williams hard to find other info. There is a tin tag under one of the motor bolts. T63 9-11 also the numbers 6494224 however hard to read. I was told it has been sitting around for a number of years. Tried starting & found gas leaking out of lower end (just above prop) I assume this is the exhaust port. The fuel system has a shut off valve & when opened in short time the fuel leaks straight through. Is this a carb problem or does it sound more serious.

Re: 7hp sears ted williams

Yes, that sounds like a carb problem. Probably the needle and seat are not closing. That could be a faulty needle and seat or a maladjusted or leaky float.<br /><br />Pull the carburetor bowl. Check the float. If it's heavy, it's leaking. If not, you can remove the needle and attempt to clean it, although a new needle and seat is a better idea.<br /><br />In all probability, you'll need to clean the carb and install a new carb kit. At the moment, I can't tell you the year and model of your outboard, but you'll need that to order the carb kit.

Re: 7hp sears ted williams

I am just a person who likes to tinker & not very experienced with engine repair. I assume that with the bowl off and using finger to hold float I should be able to open valve on fuel line and make fuel flow / stop by moving the float. That is after I at least clean the needle valve. I assume this should tell me or at least give an indication if the needle valve will hold. Prior to digging in deep I would just like to hear this thing cough before throwing much money at what might be junk.

Mike ... I also have a Sears Ted Williams 7hp and fired it up for the first time this weekend. Do you have an owners manual or do you know where I could get one? Appreciate any help as I know nothing about these motors. Thx.<br /> [/LIST]

I am the same & do not know anything about these. I was able to get this one running last night. If I am correct these are air cooled but have a water pump to cool exhaust chamber. While running this in water tank I found the portion of motor above water closest to mounting area was hot you could hold your hand on it but hot. Not sure if this is normal. found name plate 217-59440 ser# 158658 I am interested in year & if parts are still available. I think I read somewhere that the lower end uses 80-90 gear oil & motor says use #30-40 2cycle oil. I assume any 2 cycle oil for air cooled is o.k.

Yes, you should be able to test the needle and seat the way you describe, although you probably can't run the engine that way.<br /><br />As far as cooling goes, what you found is fine. If you can hold your hand on that area, it's cooling the exhaust just fine.<br /><br />You're right on the lower unit oil. Since it is an air-cooled engine, you need to use the type of oil for chain saws and weed trimmers. I don't know the year of your motor, but a 24:1 mix should be fine, until you find the correct mix.<br /><br />As for Sears, you can find your motor there by going to www3.sears.com. There, enter your model number with a period instead of the hyphen (217.59440). I checked. They have some parts available, but some are also not available, the needle and seat among them. Still, it's worth going to that site, since they also have exploded views of all the subassemblies for your outboard. I couldn't find an owners manual, though, or the year.

Re: 7hp sears ted williams

I got response from another forum this morning and I might be able to get an owners manual (PDF format) for an older ted williams motor. If I get it, I'll forward it along as it may be helpful.<br />I also found a site last night that can identify the model year from the plate #. Let me know if that is useful. The site is at http://www.discount-marine-parts.com/ob_eska_sears.html It looks like you have a 1971 model. I won't get a change to check my # until the weekend to determine the year.

Re: 7hp sears ted williams

Thanks, very usefull info. Great to get the answer on exhaust cooling & web site for sears. The last couple of years I have managed to salvage [2] other old motors a 55hp Johnston hydro-electic & 1963 35hp merc. both are running great & primarily due to the help of people on this site. Some day I will get bit on a bad purchase but currently I have a lot of faith in old motors. I am starting to beleive that a lot of these old engines did not get a lot of run time & people shy away from them simply because of age. My son has a 16ft aluminum boat that we built casting decks on with live well. etc. new carpet from home depot & looks real good this what I put the 55hp on & get 34 mph by gps. Again thanks guys for all your help.

Hello, I just purchased this same motor and am wondering if you have any insight as to what the proper spark plug is and gap for it. Thanks Jon

 If anyone knows where I can get parts for this motor, new or used, please let me know. As well, I might be interested in purchasing a unit that isn't running.

I have a 7.5 hp Ted Williams and found a repair manual through this e-mail address: frank3854950@yahoo.com
I found this on ebay and did a 'BUY IT NOW' transaction and was well pleased with the manual..he has them both on CD or a printed version (your choice)
