While preparing my boat for a trip this weekend the motor would not crank. I hear the choke engaging and the tilt/trim are working. I checked for voltage at different places and all were good even across the silenoid. I placed a screwdriver between the positive and negative terminals on the silenoid and it began to crank. I'm suspecting the the silenoid to be my problem but would like a second opinion before I replace it tomorrow.

Thanks,

Scobertt

Re: 79 Model 80hp Mercury won't crank

There are two small stud terminals on the solenoid. Put a voltmeter or test-light across these two terminals and have someone attempt to crank it. There should be power there while cranking. If no power, then start looking for a wiring/plug/switch/ground issue. If there is power there, the solenoid should click. If it clicks, check both large terminals for power while cranking.(one test lead goes to ground) If only one has power while attempting to crank, the solenoid is bad. I assume the battery and cables to the solenoid are good if you bypassed the solenoid at the terminals, and it cranked.....

:)

Thanks for the advice. I replaced the silenoid Friday afternoon and it solved my problem. I was quite confident that this was my problem but wanted second opinion since I am not a mechanic by trade.

Thanks Again,

Scobertt
