Engine is running fine after new coils, starter solenoid. I have a volt meter on my fish finder that reads above 15, 16 volts under high rpm, will display warning of to high of charging volts..Is there a voltage regulator? How do I trouble shoot?

Thanks as always in advance.

There is nothing wrong with your motor. 16V is normal for an unregulated system such as yours. There are thousands of them running around out there just fine. My gripe is the accessory makers that don't design their product to withstand what is normal.

Ok, after venting on that issue, there is a voltage regulator that can be added to your motor. Sorry, I don't have the part number handy.

Thanks,

it just started to read that high voltage recently. now the control box warning buzzer goes off until i idle down to bring the charging voltage down.

Thanks, that's good to know. I replaced the coils, starter solenoid, positive battery cable. everything was great for a couple of outings and today it spiked from high 13's to over 16 and maybe a little higher, then the control box alarm went off.Coming back to the dock at idle speed the alarm and voltage dropped down. Could it be the power pack or rectifier if there is no voltage regulator?

if you want/need a flat 12v on your depth sounder (mine was a Humminbird "wide paramount" reacting to high voltage) you can buy a 12 volts regulator chip at Radiao Shack for a few $$ .

they are good to drive 1 amp flat output 12volts with inputs from 12-30 volts !!

If you need a higher current draw for your depth sounder model you can hook-up 2-3 regulators in parallel by soldering the 3 individual legs of the chips together (do not confuse the wires....wire each identical leg to the same chip legs to respect polarity).

Soldering these small legs together takes dexterity... Fat fingered guys can just wire extension wires on each chip leg ....then pigtail
the extension wires in parallel. This makes bolting the indiviual chips on the heat sink much easier :) Cover/seal with stove pipe high heat resitant silicone

the chips have a mounting hole.. just line them up to mount on a 2 square inch aluminum plate for heat sinking
and wire in the ground , the battery +12v and... the last wire feeds the depth sounder for **** flat 12Volts.

Cover/seal with stove pipe high heat resitant silicone

Wire in a disconnect switch on the battery feed (or use INSTRUMENTS toggle switch feed) as these litlle chps will draw some milliamps even with the depth sounder off .

I never had HIGH VOLTAGE alerts and sounder auto-shut downs after I installed these chips that cost next to nothing.

Thanks, I'll work on that. Regarding my high charging voltage I think the engine ground cable needs replaced. Could an engine ground cable spike the charging voltage?

You could always hook up the fish finder to your trolling motor battery instead, that is if you have the extra battery not wired into your charging system.

or... use a small gel battery for the Depht sounder .....recharge once in a while . they last for weeks at a time before neeeding a charge

and no noise spikes from the motor
