I have a 79 Chrysler 45 hp on a 15 foot thundercraft boat. after a long winter. replacing the floor, carpet, seats, trim etc.I took it to a boat repair place to have it tuned when I got the boat in the water the first time it seemed to be slowing down after a while in wot. Well, I seem to have that problem solved,It was a bad fitting on the fuel line. Now the boat runs good with two people in the boat, but you feel a real power loss with three or four people in the boat, it will not make full power. the cavitation plate is is approximatley 1" below the hull could this be my problem? The boat seemed to run better several years ago, the compression is 125 psi on both cylinders. The motor also runs better with the cover off of the motor.

Do you have a Tillotson carb? When you said it runs better with the cover off, it sounds like a fuel problem. I would take the carb off. tear it down and soak it in cleaner or gasoline. I would then go to NAPA and get a carb rebuild kit(fuel pump and carb rebuild kits around $20 total). Check the float with the bowl off and carb upside down it should be level with base. It should extend 13/32" when inverted. Good Luck

check hood vent for obstruction like dirtdobber nest or wastnest. you could have a exzoust leaking into the cover . exzoust leak it usealey want idle with the hood on.check insulation undewr cover if loose it could be puling it over the carb opening.

Thank you for your replys, it does have a tilotson carb, that was supposedly rebuilt this spring. The vent holes are clear and I removed the insulation over the winter, it was rotten.
