79 90HP Merc

Ok, I have decided to purchase the motor and now before I pick it up, I need to get the tach, tach wiring, and ensure the controls work. I have a 84 50hp merc now, no tilt/trim. Anyway will that control box work on the 90hp I6 mortor? Will any of the below parts work on the 90hp I6 1979 Merc?<br /><br />79-825338A3<br /><br />84-86396A4 or 84-86396A8<br /><br />Curious, as I can get a pretty good deal on above parts but dont want to waste money if they wont work.<br /><br />Last question, Can my control box be upgraded to include power tilt trim switch on throttle arm? that is if my control box will work on the 90hp motor.<br /><br />Thanks

Used with Commander, Commander 2000 series side mount controls and Ignition/Choke assemblies.<br /><br /> 79-825338A 3 <br /> Gauge only. Designed for models that have a sender already installed. Do you have a sender installed?<br /><br />Might be better off with this for the trim:<br /><br />Rocker style switch with 10 ft. harness and bullet connectors. Can be suface mounted or flush mounted. Provides tilt control from the bow or transom location. # 87- 18286A18

no sender that I am aware of. I currently have the 50hp on my boat and do not have any gauges. There is a plug in the front of the Control Box that goes up under the dash but to what I am not certain, or if it even goes to anything other than the volt meter. (only gauges are speedo and volt meter on my boat currently.<br /><br />I want to put on the trim, water press, temp and Tach, with tach being most important followed by temp then water press then trim.

The plug should go to a tach.

I dont have a tach, so will any 12v 12 pin compatable tach work?<br /><br />Ed

Not quite sure what you mean by "12 pin"...

Fishin4<br /><br />I would really like to see a a pic of the '79..<br />Don't know exactly how they are marked..<br />I think.. some red white blue stripes with a bit of a curve at the front.

If you mean 12 pole, then yes, it will work, with the setting on the back of the tach set at 6. Look for a gray wire at the end of that cable running from the control box. Someone may have used the 12 Volt power from it to power something under the dash for convenience...<br /><br /> web page (PDF file)

Unicorn, Shoot me an email I will get you some photos as soon as I can. I dont think it has any red striping though, but not sure, Havent seen the motor myself yet
