I am trying to change the inner and outer seals in the bearing housing. the prop is off, bearing housing is out so it is easy to work with, but these seals for some reason will not budge. I have soaked it in wd40, used a pry from behind them, tried to cut away some of the rubber, tried to slowly work a razor around the edge without gauging the housing, and even taken a torch to the housing in an effort to expand it enough to pry the seals out. Not even a wiggle. Any suggestions? I am a day away from torching the seals and just trying to burn them out, but even then there will still be the metal frame of the seal to deal with. :(
There is almost no corrosion, so I am starting to wonder if the previous owner put something on the seals to make them seize up in there. Or is it that these metal framed seals are for the drive shaft and not the prop shaft? I got a seal kit from iboats but it has both the metal/rubber and only rubber seals, they appear to be the same size but I haven't checked closely. Either way, the ones that are in there are giving me quite a bit of trouble.
Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem...put the housing in a vise (without damaging it) or get someone to help hold it flat on a bench and use a seal puller/pryer. Just be careful not to scratch the inner surface when you pull on the side of the seal. This should work for you.

thanks, this is resolved. i rented a nice size slide hammer (free tools from autozone :)), heated the housing until the seals were mush, and went to town for about 20 minutes, rotating the teeth of the hammer as i went. after a while i was discouraged but then i noticed it had moved ever so slightly, so another 20 minutes of vigorous hammering and they gave out. not the prettiest solution, but the inner surface appears unscathed (not sure how, it's been getting violent the past few days) and i am happy.
now i am trying to find the right gearcase oil. can't find what's in the SELOC manual anywhere. anyone know if any of the ones on iboats are ok? there is gear lube and gear oil - do i need both? i know i need some kind of lubricant for the prop shaft as i put everything back on, but again can't find what SELOC calls for. can someone guide me on this and let me know what i need to fill the lower unit with as well as what i need to grease on the prop shaft? i'd prefer to buy from iboats to support the forums. thanks
