Serial # 5443137. When I shift to reverse and give it some throttle the engine kicks up. Also will leak down slowly from a raised position. Takes approx. 5-8 minutes to leak down. I have tried turning the reverse lock knob on Tilt/Trim pump both ways and still does it. Could this be leaking cylinder seals internally , or a bad pump? Or would air in the lines/cylinders cause this? I removed the T/T pump to replace brushes in the motor when I first bought boat prior to ever putting it in the water, so I don't know if it worked right before. I tried to bleed the lines, even though the mech who did my link/synch said they were self bleeding. The pump is mounted down under the transom inside boat and feeds two cylinders. <br /> Thanks for any input or advice. Stu

I assume when you changed the brushes you also checked the level of the fluid, was the level low before you worked on the the pump motor? what method did you use when you tried to bleed the system , and did you have to add to the system when you did it.

Re: 79 140 hp Mariner, reverse kick up

radsrh, I pulled the pump and motor out and drained all oil out before taking to a local motor shop who put new brushes in motor. I then put pump and motor back in boat and filled with Tranny fluid. Per the boat shop mech who did my carb rebuild and link/sync. I reconnected all lines, filled with fluid and tried raising and lowering motor, it worked great, from full up to full down. I topped off the reservoir to the top of the fill plug. The mech said this type does not need to be bled so I took his word for it because it worked fine in my shop. I then took it out on the water and noticed the reverse problem. When I got back home I tried bleeding the lines as detailed in the manual, adding fluid as needed. Put back in water, still kicks up. Thanks for the help, Stu

Cylinder piston seals, or check valves in hyd pump body. You can check the cylinders, by raising the engine to max lift, block engine, remove lines and cap/plug lines, remove block. If you have no leaks and engine does not leak down cylinders should be ok.

do as claton says to check cylinders, if they check out ok and you have no external leaks then go after the check valves.
