Hello all,

I have a 1979 6cyl (cdi type ignition) mercury 115hp outboard. When you move the throttle past about 20% the motor dies, however if you pop the choke for just a second it suddenly has all the power inthe world,

If you throttle back and then back up your fine it is just that initial hit.... If you power off completely then back on then you have to hit the choke again to get any power formt he motor...

Any ideas?

TIA

Idle mixtures are just a hair lean. fatten them up just the bladewidth of the screwdriver slot, retest holeshot. repeat to perfection.

Increased loads, like pulling up a tube or skier, even an extra ice chest can cause the motor to require just a bit more fuel to accelerate.

If the load hasn't changed and this is a newly developed problem, it may be a sign that the carb(s) are getting dirty and in need of proper cleaning. If this is the case, get it done as running your motor lean at WOT will soon be cause for a rebuild when you begin melting pistons.
