I posted this question a while back but failed to give all pertinent information. Recently, I noticed a sheen on the water around my engine after running at WOT for approximately 5 minutes. Inspection revealed a film of fuel on the engine. I removed the air silencer cover and found a puddle of fuel in the bottom. The hose from the air silencer to the manifold is in tact and apparently unobstructed. The engine starts easy and idles fine. On plane from moderate to WOT, the engine runs great (does not miss and tachs out at approximately 5000 RPM at max trim. I had to rebuild the engine many years ago (the infamous late 70's piston design but have only experienced this problem recently. I rebuilt the carburetors based on a friend's experience but this did not improve the situation. It appears that more fuel is coming from the side opposite the fuel pump. At first I thought the fuel was coming from hose connections (old ty-wraps) and the fuel pump. I replaced the ty-wraps with hose clamps and replaced the fuel pump.

Thanks for the help. This bulletin board is great.

Howdy tks1954. I thought I had offered this when you posted before. Maybe not.

It is common when reeds get sticky, weaken or start to chip off to get fuel air mixture ejected through the carbs. This happens first at WOT, then at cruise, etc. It may also happen if the reed clearance to the stops is adjusted too far. . . the reeds weaken and don't have time to close properly before crankcase pressure goes positive.

It is one possibility.

Red sky at night. . .
JB
