I have an 79 evinrude that I am going be putting on a 87 ranger bass boat. The boat currently has the key on dash to start and the engine kill wired separtly next to the existing merc controls. My issue is the evinrude has the key in the side controls. I would like to keep the key in the dash. Is this a big deal to move this out of the evinrude control box? The evinrude also has the push in electric choke. Second question, the boat has a temperature gauge from previous motor. I know the evinrude just has the sensor in the heads the sound alarm when it overheats. Is there anyway to adapt a temperature sensor to this motor to enable use of the temperature gauge in dash?

Thanks.

I take it by the lack of response I should just remove all the wiring and replace with the evinrude wiring and leave key in control box. Anyone have suggestion how to wire in kill switch. All of my previous boat have been to old to have this feature.

If you wire the key switch to the dash, keep in mind that the neutral safety switch is still in the control box. Probably easiest to just use the OMC box. The kill lanyard came out in the 82 model year. You may find the wiring diagrams for the 1982 OMC's helpful: they are in the first thread at the top of page 1 of this Johnson/evinrude section. Called the top secret files. Looks fairly simple. It's wired to the black wire with the yellow tracer-the kill wire for the ignition and ground.

I'm in the middle of doing the same thing myself. I wanted to hide the wiring and control cables behind a sideboard and just have the lever visible. My motor is a '95 175hp Johnson but they should be basically the same. The following year they introduced icommand so it was a bit different then, apparently. I was fortunate to have another control box to pull apart to see what would be involved. Basically it's just a matter of extending the ignition wires. As Emd stated, the neutral kill switches at the box will need to be moved as well. I'm moving my warning horn to the dash as well. Later today I'll wire a dash warning light to the dash as well. I haven't determined yet if it's going to be in series or parallel until I check the horn resistance and look up whether I can do an LED in series without affecting the output signal. I'll see how my results are and get som pics up if I can.

Well Harleyguy, not sure if your still on this project but I'll post my pics in case others are interested in the future. I took the key switch out of the control box and sized one of the former light switch holes for it to go through. The yellow red wires are the neutral lockout switch wires that I've extended from inside the control box to reach the dash. They will be covered in a piece of the outer jacket of another OMC control cable I had previously shortened. This box also didn't have a deadman switch so I took one of those I had lying around and will hook that up on the dash and use for really bad seas or just to kill the motor in case of a driveway runaway while flushing. I'm just glad to be able to get all these wires out of sight finally. Hope this helps.
