78Mercinline6cyl90or140hp?

i have a 78 merc outboard labeled 90 hp.Call in serial # they tell me its 140 hp.What do i buy parts for??? help me.

if you are talking about the in line 6 cylinder the '78 models included was the 900,1150,1400 and 1500xs.in 69 there were a model 1000.it is the only model that differs from the rest.<br />models 900(90 hp) and 1400(140hp) had the same displacement ie.1635cc

birdman42:<br /><br />The only difference in the inline 6 90 - 150 is the exhuast port sizing. Everything else is the same.<br /><br />Havew fun with your motor. Mine is a 79 Merc 140. Keep in mind that your motor (And mine) is rated at the crankshaft while from 82 on the hp rating is at the prop. What Mercury did was drop the 90, put the 90 cowlings on the 115, put the 115 cowlings on the 140 and 140 cowlings on the 150 and then dropped the 140 for the V-6 models.<br /><br />Craig

Did merc have a 150 inline after 1978?

what200:<br /><br />I don't believe they did, but I could be wrong. I think the V-6 Black Max came out before they dropped the 140 though. I wish tey still made the inline 6 emgines. They were bullet proof.
