Hoping someone out there can help me out. I bought a '78 bayliner with an old volvo Penta engine (AQ 130D) and am trying to figure out if there is another engine that can be swapped in to replace it. I have found a 2nd engine however I'm not sure that it's in any better condition than the one that's in there. Is there any point in rebuilding?? Anyone have an idea on how much it would cost?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You could maranize an automotive B20 as a replacement or you could go with one of the OHC engines (B230). The only major modification you'll need for the OHC engine is a forward slanted transom plate exhaust pipe - easily available at a marine boneyard or on ebay.

Rebuild costs will vary by area and what you want to do. It wouldn't be unreasonable to expect around $1500 to rebuild either the pushrod or rubber band engine. Some rebuild parts are available for the B20. IPD is a good source if you can't find them at the marine suppliers. Depends on what's wrong with the existing engine. If it's been rebuilt in the past, you may have problems finding oversided rings and pistons.

The advantage of the OHC engines is that they're newer and parts are more readily available even though they're also out of production.

So what's wrong with the existing engine?
