78 merc. tilt / trim problem

guys i have a 78 merc. 140. the tilt and trim will work going down but not up. when i hit the up switch i hear nothing. the motor is in down position and i need to let it up.what do u think is the problem and how can i get the motor up since the up is not working. thanks alot

It sounds like one of the coils on the trim motor/hydrulic pump is out. Try swapping the up and down coils around and see if that will work, but you will probally need to buy a new coil.

If it has a release valve. Turn it and then you can lift it by hand. Tim

where is this release valve located.. also how to i check the coil. any advice

take an electrical meter and test for continuity across the positive and negative side.

Charlie, if yours is like mine...the pump is mounted off the motor...on the floor.<br /><br />If so, the release valve is located on the front of the pump assembly. It's a knurled knob, and you turn it clockwise to release.<br /><br />Thanks for reading, Chuck
