78 Merc outboard 50 hp problem

I have been having what I believe is a fuel problem with my outboard. At low throttle it appears to run ok. But at high throttle it acts like it is not getting any gas. Both carbs have been rebuilt including the built-in fuel pumps. I can press the electric choke and it speeds up (like it is getting fuel). You can keep pressing the choke and it seems to run fine. I have been told that I could have a reed valve problem, but I thought the only reed valves are in the fuel pump. Any ideas? Thanks.

What year is your motor? If it has the long style fuel plug in at the motor, these were notorious for leaking air. There is also an o ring in the receptacle on the engine.

Sorry, I didn't read the post well enough. It's a "78". This has the type of fuel connector I was thinking of.

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT MOST POEPLE WOULD
NOT THINK ABOUT BUT IF YOUR COMMPRESS IS
DOWN YOU NEED MORE FUEL.
CHECK WHAT IT SHOULD BE AND IT IS.
THAT THE RATIO OF THAT. THEN DO THE SAME
TO THE HIGH SPEED JETS. AND SHE WILL
RUN LIKE A TOP.
REX A. HUBBLE

P.S. CHECK WITH TRENT AND SEE WHAT HE THINK ABOUT IT. IT IS DIFFERENT.
BUT IF YOU CAN MAKE YOU BOAT RUN GOOD BEST
TO YOU. :) :D
