78 Johnson 85hp. not charging

What are some things that I can check to find out why this thing wont charge? Thanks for any advice you can give a complete boat motor idiot!

You need to check for AC voltage comming out of the stator (yellow wires normally). If so check the voltage regulator/rectifier. Is your tach working? A bad regulator/rectifier will also cause the tach not to work.
