My new (to me) 1978, 35 J0hnson jumps out gear (forward) under a load,. it''l idle fine & both forward and reverse are working. When I got the motor the water pump was fried! After putting a new water pump in it & trying it on the lake, it won't stay in forward gear. No, I don't think I turned the bottom shifter rod. IT TOOK ME FOREVER TO get the shift rod ifar enough up into the coupler. I finally took the foot back off & clamped the brass connector on to be sure it was in the notch in the knob. Brass connector / coupling threads were stripped. Had been drilled out to 5/16", coarse threads!! Wouldn't hold, bottom shift rod came completly out under load when I went to the lake . Jumps out of gear on take off!!
I have tried to adjust the linkage at the brass coupler, but there's not much to adjust when the shift rod knob is in the correct position. The upper detent lever seemed to hang up on the shift lever roller when in reverse. I by passed it, used a spring to hold it out of the shift lever's roller. Under acceleration (in tank) it jumps out! I adjusted the shift cable, then the shift lever. Trolls fine, hope it's not the dogs! I just put a trap strap or spring on it the lever & it stays in gear! It ,the shift lever, seems to have some slack in it fore & aft. I put a spring on the shift lever to hold it all the way in forward & it seems to pull ok in a tank. Of course, with remote steer, this added spring you have no reverse!
The adjustment on the shift lever is VERY hard to get just right! (also the control cable).
Adjusted some more, to no avail! With tension on the shift lever it will stay in gear. It is very hard to fine tune the shift lever with the control cable because it has some slack in it also.
Before I give up & tear down the lower unit, I need some tips on adjusting & matching the lever control cable, etc.
Don' have a manual yet.
Reckon the gear detent / safety arm is bent? I think it's in the adjustment!
Thanks in Advance
