78 JOHNSON 115 WATER PUMP AND SHIFT ROD

Hello, I am replacing the water pump and wanted to ask what type of sealant I need to put on the pump housing O ring? Also, is sealant required on the other gaskets in the water pump assembly?
Also, since I have the lower unit off, would it be a good idea to measure the shift rod height? I there a procedure to measure it without the tool shown in the manual?

It is 21-27/32"----------Measured from surface to center of hole in neutral.----Measuring tape works just fine.
