78 70hp 3 cyl water pump

This is my first water pump install!!
Exactly which way does the pump impeller go?
Where am I going wrong?
The drive shaft turns to the right or clockwise?
The impeller turns to the right and the flexible vanes bend to the left?
The closed-off keyway shaft opening is the top of the impeller and has to go up to get the impeller over the key?
I am sure this has been covered many times so please bare with me!

The driveshaft always turns clockwise.
sorry, don't understand "closed-off keyway shaft opening...has to go up"

put the impeller on the driveshaft and slip the key into the driveshaft slot just before the impeller covers it.

A little grease in the housing and put it over the impeller, turn the driveshaft (clockwise) with your hand as you push the housing down - a good bit of force is required, but don't use any tools on it.

I would flush your water lines while the lower unit is down with compressed air or the garden hose. Dont forget to add some marine grease to the splines of the driveshaft before reinstallation.
