i've got a 78 evinrude 35 hp, long shaft. purchased the boat/motor/trailer a couple of years ago, worked fine, this spring it started slipping out of gear. after reviewing the threads here and the symptoms, figured it was the clutch dog slipping. i pulled the lower unit off, took it apart to look it over. the clutch looks good, minimal wear, front and rear gears look fine too. no extensive amount of wear was apparent. put it back together, ran it and the same thing. What else could cause it to be slipping other than the clutch? any help appreciated.

disconnect the remote shift cable, and manually shift. those edges on the dog and gears have to be square, no rounded edges.

when i pulled them out to inspect them, they look very good, squared off edges. by unhooking the remote shift, possible a bad shifter?

streched cables, not shifting all the way into gear. or misadjusted cables.
