78 200 20hp Question

i have a 78 200 20hp i found a part laying in the bottom and looked it up it said it was the follower and what ever it bolted to broke off just a little piece of metal i can't tell where it broke off to order a new part to bolt it back up. do i even need the follower? i have used it for a couple of
years and it runs . what does the follower do? any help?

Also Does Anyone Know If I Should Go With A 9deg Pitch 11 Or 13 Prop. The 13 Is Cupped? I Belive It Has What Ever Came Stock On It

it is a good idea to get it replaced. Merc put it on there for a reason. While it may not keep it from running it probably does something. If you found out what type of part it is, how do you not know where it came from. Post a picture of the part and maybe we can figure out where it goes.
