Hello engine gurus,
Thank you for your help with our boating woes in the world! I still need help, however.
My 1977 Johnson 35HP, serial no. 35e77c is leaking fuel down the exhaust housing. I have rebuilt the carb, replacing gaskets, float, inlet needle and seat and blown everything clean wth air and carb cleaner. Also, I have replaced the fuel hoses and added an inline fuel filter. The engine starts right up cold (with choke) and holds a great idle. Also, when warm it starts right up and idles great. Runs great at low speed, and mid-throttle.
When I go to full throttle, it runs up, gets up on plane, runs great for a minute, and then hiccups. That is the best way I can describe it. Then, it continues to run fine at full throttle with no further hiccups. When I turn off the engine, wait for a while and then start up again, the whole process above repeats with the hiccup.
After the hiccup, there is fuel all down the exhaust housing. I thought it might be the inlet needle, but it has been cleaned and replaced. I also thought adding the fuel filter might help, but now when I pressurize the line to start the engine cold, fuel leaks from the fuel pump where the gasket attaches to the power head. The engine runs fine, however, so fuel is making it through the filter.
What could cause this hiccup?
Why does fuel leak from the fuel pump now that I have an inline filter? (This did not happen before installing the filter)
One source of the fuel on the exhaust housing is from the leaking fuel pump, but it is also coming from another source, which I believe is the carb. I could be wrong about this.
All of these things seem to contrbute to the fuel running down the exhaust housing, which is an indicator something is not right and needs to be fixed. Thank you in advance for your help. I'm learning as I go. This is a long post, but I wanted to be thourough.
