77 Evinrude 115 neutral

We replaced the shifter cable last week and haven't been able to figure out why it won't get in neutral. Well I messed with it enough today, (without my husband standing around screaming that nothing was wrong, it was fine) and found out that neutral is not straight up and down on the control box it's actually back about 2 inches from straight up and down. Can anybody give me any clues? :/

is the shifter mounted level? disconnect the cable at the engine, put controller in where it locks into neutral, put the engine in neutral, now adjust the nut on the cable so the it engages with the engine, without moving the engine lever.

Also a slight adjustment on the top of the shift rod. It is just a fine adjustment.
