I have 1977 Beach Craft with a 351 inboard outboard OMC motor. The boat filled with water onto the carpet turned it off and turned on the pump when I turned the boat back on, and shifted into gear the rpms would shoot way up but it wouldn't go anywhere just wondering what I have to do to fix the problem? thanks

find out why it's sinking first.

I was out with it for about 8 HOURS before that water came in that much not to concerned with that right now unless it is part of the problem but it has been that way since I got it 2 years ago

No water should leak into the bilge of a fiberglass boat. after you find out why it's sinking (transom boot, shift cable) you could check to see if the ball gears are turning. Then probable causes of a loss of propulsion :
1. rubber friction hub in propeller slipping (rubber rotted)
2. shear pin in prop shaft broke
3. splines of water pump shaft between upper and lower outdrive gearcases stripped
4. splines in engine crankshaft coupler stripped
5. blown fuse or bad wire to shifter
6. bad shift switch in shift/throttle control
7. poor ground connection between sterndrive and engine
8. water in lower unit gear oil causing short circuit of electromagnets
