77 beachcraft wont go

I have 1977 Beach Craft with a 351 inboard outboard OMC motor. The boat filled with water onto the carpet turned it off and turned on the pump when I turned the boat back on, and shifted into gear the rpms would shoot way up but it wouldn't go anywhere just wondering what I have to do to fix the problem? thanks

It has always talon in a lil bit of water since I got it 2 years ago it took about 8 hours to build up that much water I just forgot to turn on the pump and let it get that high so I am really not concerned about that for now unless it may be part of the problem.

First of all you really need to find the leak Its not a stretch that it could change from 8 hours to 8 minutes to fill it.
Most likely the water got into the coupler which at 30+ years old could have failed at any time,
but likely with a warning slipping like a car clutch might.
