I have a 77 70HP Evinrude, Model # 70773S
Serial # J0004316 Spark advance 17Degrees

I was slowly backing away from the boat ramp and shifted to forward gear sort of quickly. I heard a metallic click which I thought was the reverse safety latch releasing.

I gave it a little throttle in the forward gear and started moving forward. Then, for no reason at all, the motor died
suddenly. When I tried to start it, was locked up. I could shift it from forward to reverse and back to neutral by rotating the prop by hand so the gears would sync. The prop seemed to be harder to rotate by hand when in neutral than it usually was. I couldn't get it unlocked to where the starter would turn it over. It is locked up solid.

I have an Evinrude/Johnson Outboard Shop Manual to work with and I am thinking about removing the lower unit myself and repairing it.
My question is, what do you think the problem is and do you think I can repair it with out the measurement tools described in the manual. I would take it to a mechanic but I am on Social security and it would really put me in a bind to pay for it. I was a heavy equipment operator for years and have some mechanic experience but not on outboard motors. I have a 3 hole and a 2 hole puller and other hand tools to work with but do not have the shaft length measuring tools.

I would greatly appreciate any advise you could give me.
