I fired up this motor in a barrel today after better than a decade of sitting. I changed LU lube, new impeller, cleaned w/carb cleaner and put in carb kit, new plugs, and new gas lines. It hit first lick, but it only runs with assistance of the choke. Adjusted low speed in increments of 1/4 turn from 1 turn to 3 turns out. Ran best about 2 turns and got worse beyond that, always needing choke assistance.

What am I missing here?

Have you checked compression on this motor? If so, and it's OK, and you check the spark and it's OK, then you're left with a fuel problem.

New lines. Old tank? Air leak in fuel system? Defective fuel pump?

Re: '77 35hp e/start Evinrude needs choking

Compression is OK (over 100), spark jumps 7/16" gap easily. I replaced primer bulb and end fittings on new gas line. Also, I dis-assembled the fuel pump, cleaned, and put in a new kit.

I feel confident that I'm not sucking air. It still only runs (in a barrell) by constantly bumping the choke. Any suggestions at this point?

You had to have missed some stuff in your idle jet or the float is not set correctly.

Found this problem. When I put the carb kit in, I included a new idle screw bearing. When thinking back, I remembered that the old one hadn't come out when I removed the idle screw. I had 2 in there. Using a long, keen drywall screw, I removed the second one. It cured that problem, but then I lost spark and am working on that now.

Glad that you found problem number one. Problem number two can be diagnosed with a search on lost spark. Let us know.

After I finished with the carbs, the engine started and ran a few minutes, then stopped abruptly, as if the key had been turned off. It then started and ran a few seconds and did the same thing. After that, it wouldn’t start at all.

I did a spark test with a dual spark tester and I had no spark on either cylinder.

Steps performed per OMC manual:
•
• Checked visually for wiring shorts
• Checked for spark on both cyls. – none.
• Disconnected wiring harness from help to eliminate kill circuit.
• Checked kill circuit for shorts, etc. – none.
• Battery charged
• Checked ohms on sensor coil – within spec
• Checked ohms on charge coil – within spec
• Checked ohms on ignition coils – within spec
• Again, disconnected stop button circuit and tested – no improvement

At this point I needed a tester (neon?, M-80, or S-80) which I don’t have. I have ordered a power pack since it was the cheapest of the remaining parts which could be causing the problem.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If you definitely have spark to both cylinders then you can rule out a bad coil. I believe your engine still has points. You might pull the flywheel and see if they need a good cleaning or regapping. If you have had the flywheel off you may not have torqued it to specs and sheared the flywheel key. Could also be a loose/cut wire under the flywheel. Just some options to check before spending the bucks on a powerpack. Might be time for new champions too.

It is the CDI ignition, no points. I think '77 was the first year on this size motor. The '76 35 hp had points. So far, I haven't removed the flywheel. I have checked several times for loose, frayed, or worn wires but found none. Thank-you for your replies and attention.

Well, the power pack came a little while ago. I put it on and now have lots of spark. One final question - is there anything under the flywheel that could have caused the old power pack to go out and am I in jeopardy of losing the new one.

Thank-you for all responses.

Usually not. If that one lasted almost 30years I wouldn't worry.
