I have an old 10 hp Evinrude and I believe the points may need adjusting or replacement. Is ther any tricks to removing the flywheel to access the magneto? I've seen a service manual for a 5 horse and most everything looks the same, but it's not too clear on how the flywheel comes off. It mentions using a special tool, but I think a "web" type wrench would work.

Hi, Vern. If you don't have a flywheel puller (that may be the "web wrench" you mentioned) there is a slightly risky trick I've used for years: Loosen the flywheel retaining nut until it's top is flush with the end of the crankshaft. With a screwdriver, apply a gentle prying pressure to the flywheel in the OFF direction. Then with a plastic or brass mallet rap the end of the flywheel/retaining nut. Don't use a steel hammer to do this or you will need a new crankshaft. Usually, the flywheel will pop loose on the first or second try. Well equipped pro's usually hate this idea, but I've seen many others use it safely.

Good luck.
JB
