Hello everyone,
this is my first post, i have a 1991 alcan ambassador 16ft runabout with a 85 hp 1976 johnson...everything was running great last weekend until the warning alarm went on and stayed on...we figured probably overheat alarm....the next day we started the motor up and the alarm went on almost right away and stays on.....the motor is cold so overheat should not be the issue....is there a procedure to see if horn is defective?...it does not beep when key is switched on....could it be a fuel delivery warning?...id like to fix it on the water i dont want to run it all the way to the landing to repait it if i can ....
Thank you!!

Re: 76 johnson 85 hp waring alarm

Your 1976 engine has a pretty simple horn system. It does not beep when first turned on, like the newer models. The horn only goes on when one of the two head switches thinks the head is heated up to 212 degrees. When that happens, the switch(s) goes to ground, sounding a constant (overheat) horn. You could temporarily disconnect both head swtiches at the knife connector by each switch. Then turn the key switch to on. If no horn, one of the switches or it's wire may be bad. If you get a horn with both switches disconnected, the problem is probably in the control box, perhaps even the horn itself.

Thank you for your input!...I will test it out tomorrow after work and keep you posted.:)
