I have a 76 40hp Johnson and for some reason it will not keep running. It will crank up when I have it choked but when I do not it will not crank. I think that it may be a fuel problem, but I have checked to see if the fuel is pumping into the carb and it is. Could someome please give me a little guidance on what to check next or what it might be. Thank you.

Sure sounds like a gummed up carburetor to me, jbsiv. It could also be a carb that is set too lean to run the engine.

Will it keep running if you keep it choked?

No, it will idle for about 30 sec. but then it will die.

things break, and clog. check your spark, check your compression. but, i agree with JB. carbs, fuel lines, ethanol poison. read Ethanol, Carb cleaning in the TOP SECRET FILE, 1st thread in this section.

it will start with just one cylinder firing.
