got a 76 johnson that had been converted from
points to electronic ignition because one cyc
linder was not firering. A friend suggested to switch to electronic ignition. Come to find out it was the stator plate. The stator
plate had play in it suggesting that one cylinder was not getting fire. I Changed the plate and put it back less condensers, this is the way it was when I removed the flywheel, I tried to start the motor and there is no fire. I looked at the motor closely and saw that there are two red square plastic pieces with the name of "Atoms starter ignition" written on them. So I quess I have three questions. 1. With the Atoms ignitions parts the condensers are no longer needed therefore killing the points, is this the best way to go? 2. Should I go back to points? 3.Could there be another problem, coils, stator plate etc?

just my 2 cents, I would go back to the points, I have had to much trouble with the new stuff (not just on boats). also timing is critical on 2 cycle engines. but then my cars and boats are from the 50's and 60's
Richard

I would try and locate the correct parts also. Them ATOM ignitions were popular in the late 80's through mid 90's they were sold on an aftermarket base and eliminated the condenser and points. alot of these were used on lawnmowers etc. I would try setting it to being as orig as possible I can try and help you if at all possible.

Allan
